Our coaching staff offers private fencing instruction for individuals, duos, and small groups both in-person and online. Lessons are available for rapier, dueling saber, dueling sword/smallsword, and spear/partisan.

Private lessons are perfect for students who can’t make it to our weekly schedule classes, prefer not practicing in group settings, or are seeking a more specialized, tailored lesson specific to their goals and needs.

We also offer exciting group adventure programs that perfect for your next party or family/friend outing.

In-Person | Individual & Small Group Training

Our coaching staff offers private historical fencing lessons for individuals and small groups.

Lessons are completely tailored to the individual student(s) wants, needs, and experience level. However, a typical lesson includes:

  • General warmup.
  • Fencing-focus performance warmup to improve a student’s athletic ability, footwork agility, and mental focus/reaction time.
  • Core fencing actions, scaled to the student’s skill level (i.e., get better at the fundamentals!).
  • Advance techniques & tactics to either refine a student’s depth of skill or breadth of fencing knowledge.

In general, private lessons are a collaborative effort between coach and student, meaning students are always in charge of their education and what they want to learn. The coach is there to help guide the student on their journey, provide context and refinement, answer questions, and act as a life-size pin cushion. 😀

NOTE: You don’t need to be a student of Boston Academie d’Armes to enjoy the benefits of our private instruction. We’re happy to train our own students as well as fencers from other HEMA/WMA schools or SCA Rapier groups. We also have loaner gear that students can borrow during sessions.

In-person private lessons can be conducted at your home, a local public park, or at one of our partnering venue locations.

The Art of the Duel | Small Group Outing

Ever wondered what it’d be like to fight in a duel? Want to learn how to fence like a Musketeer or live your dream of becoming a famous swashbuckler? Now you can with our Art of the Duel Adventure Program! This program is perfect for small groups of friends and family looking for a fun outing or to celebrate a special occasion.

Over the course of two hours you and your group will learn all the essentials of defending yourself in a Renaissance duel, including:

  • The history and evolution of the sword and the duel
  • How to stand & hold a sword
  • How to move with grace & power
  • Several basic attacks for dispatching your adversary
  • How to defend yourself from oncoming attacks
  • Specialized actions such as body voids, disarms, and yields (think: sneaky, dirty tricks!)

We do this all with our usual expert instruction and a mix of partnered drills and exciting fencing games. At the end, you also get the chance to fight in your very own duel with one another or against our staff (all with safety gear).

The Art of the Duel Adventure can be done at your home, place of business, or at one of our partnering venue locations.

We have three themes to choose from:

  • The Art of Swordplay with the Rapier
  • The Art of the Duel with Dueling Saber
  • The Art of the Duel with Dueling Sword/Smallsword

All of our Adventure Programs are customizable. If you have something specific dream in mind, get in touch! We’re happy to brainstorm and help you plan an amazing outing!
